At Forres Primary Academy, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. We aim to develop confident, enthusiastic and independent mathematicians who enjoy exploring numbers, recognising patterns, solving problems and explaining their thinking.

We want our children to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics and understand how mathematical skills are used in everyday life.

Our Maths Curriculum

At Forres Primary Academy, we use White Rose Maths to support the planning and delivery of our mathematics curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6.

White Rose Maths follows a mastery approach, allowing children to develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts before building on their knowledge.

Our curriculum focuses on three key areas:

• Fluency: Developing confidence and accuracy with numbers, calculations and mathematical facts.

• Reasoning: Encouraging children to explain their thinking, make connections and justify their answers.

• Problem-solving: Applying mathematical knowledge to a variety of familiar and unfamiliar situations.

We provide appropriate support and challenge so that all children can make progress and experience success.

How We Teach Mathematics

We follow the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach, helping children develop a deep understanding of mathematics.

Mathematics in the Early Years

In our Early Years provision, mathematics is developed through practical activities, purposeful play, exploration and discussion.Children develop their understanding of number, counting, patterns, shape, space and measures through engaging, hands-on experiences.We place particular importance on developing strong foundations in number and helping children recognise relationships between numbers.

Mathematics in Key Stages 1 and 2

As children move through the school, they build upon their existing knowledge through carefully sequenced learning.Using White Rose Maths, children explore important mathematical concepts in manageable steps, allowing them to develop fluency and deepen their understanding.Children are encouraged to use mathematical vocabulary, explain their reasoning, identify misconceptions and apply their knowledge to increasingly challenging problems.

Developing Mathematical Confidence

We believe that having a positive attitude towards mathematics is essential.At Forres Primary Academy, we encourage children to be curious, ask questions, persevere when faced with challenges and recognise that making mistakes is an important part of learning.

Our aim is to create a classroom environment where children feel confident to share their ideas, explore different methods and celebrate their achievements.

Supporting Maths at Home

Parents and carers can make a valuable contribution to their child's mathematical development.

Everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, telling the time, measuring, playing games and discussing numbers provide meaningful opportunities to practise mathematical skills.

White Rose Maths also provides resources to help families understand how mathematics is taught in school.

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a short online assessment taken by children in Year 4. It checks how quickly and accurately pupils can recall multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. The check consists of 25 questions, with children given 6 seconds to answer each question. It helps teachers identify children who may need additional support with their multiplication facts and informs future teaching and intervention. The MTC will be carried out in June.
